Spectator Safety Training
In 2008 the Department for Culture, Media and Sport produced the fifth edition of 'Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds' often referred to as 'The Green Guide'
Within the guide it gives a definition of a steward:
'A steward (also referred to at certain sports grounds as a marshall) is a person who has obtained a level 2 stewarding qualification within the relevant qualification framework, or is undergoing training and assessment for such a qualification and who is employed or contracted by managment to act in accordance with the general recommendations of the Guide and, where appropriate, the specific requirements of the safety certificate.'
Although the Guide does state that it is not a mandatory requirment of the Guide, to have stewards trained, it does state that it will more than likely be a compulsory requirement of any 'safety certificate'
As we described earlier our trainers regularly deliver level 2, 3 and 4 NVQ qualifications within the framework, most recently at Carlisle football ground in conjunction with Carlsile college of Further Education.
The majority of funding for the training of stewards is available through government backed schemes and we make every effort to obtain this funding, usually with the assistance of a local Further Education college, who are NVQ providers with 'Train to Gain' status.
All of the training, assessing and internal verification work is carried out in the work place, from the delivery of theoretical input, followed by work place assessment, thereby allowing all parties to continue with their tasks, without interfearing with individual roles and responsibilities, all that we ask for as your training providers is somewhere within the stadia that can be utilised by us as an office during the times we spend with you and your stewards.
Should you wish to discuss this further then please do not hesitate to email your queries to Steve Barlow as per the link on the Home page.
